neuromore Studio

Windows, menus and shortcuts

This page lists the windows, menus, settings and keys in Studio 1.8.2. What you see depends on your account, so you may have fewer windows, layouts or menu entries. Differences from the public 1.7.3 release are marked. See What changed since 1.7.3.

Note: Studio has no undo. It also has no save shortcut, and menu actions have no keyboard shortcuts. Save with a menu entry or the Save button.

Open a window with Windows > Add. For docking and layouts, see Layouts.

While a session runs, you can’t change a window’s docking. You can’t switch layouts either.

Some windows have a gear button that opens a settings panel. Defaults apply to a new window. A predefined layout can store other values.

Window Setting Default Range or values
Raw EEG uV/Div 300 0.01 to 1000
Autoscale On
Time (s) 10 1 to 60
Show Voltages Off
Show Times On

Show Latency Off
Signal View Time Range (s) 30 1 to 1200
Style Lines Boxes, Bars, Lollipops, Dots, Lines
Show Latency Off
Spectrum View Min Frequency 0 0 or higher
Max Frequency 50 0 or higher

The 2D Spectrogram panel has its own page: 2D Spectrogram.

In 1.7.3: The 2D Spectrogram panel has only three settings.

The Spectrum Analyzer Settings window has no gear button. Its controls are in the window itself:

Setting Default Range or values
FFT Order 9 5 to 13
Shift 8 1 to 512 samples
Window Function Hann A list that includes Rectangular, Hann, Hamming and Blackman

These controls don’t change FFT nodes. Each FFT node has its own settings. See Nodes.

In 1.7.3: The FFT Order default is 7 and the Window Function default is Rectangular. The window function has no effect on FFT output.

The whole menu bar is disabled from the moment a session is prepared until it stops. On macOS, the menus are inside the Studio window, not in the system menu bar.

This is the first menu. It is called NMStudio in the default build.

Entry What it does
Save Same as Design > Save. Shown when you can write to the open Design.
Close Closes the open Design with its classifier and state machine. Shown when a Design is open. See Closing and exiting.
Reset Engine Resets the engine, then reloads the Design settings and parameters. Does nothing during a session.
Settings Opens the Settings window.
Log out Asks you to confirm, removes the saved login, closes Studio and tries to restart it.
Exit Closes Studio. See Closing and exiting.
Entry What it does
Add Opens a window. It floats at 400 x 300 pixels. A window that allows only one instance is not listed while it is open.
Remove Lists the open windows. Choose one to close it, or choose Remove All.
Layouts Lists the layouts. Some accounts also get Save, Save As and Remove here. See Layouts.

This menu appears only when a Design you can write to is open.

Entry What it does
Reload Closes the Design and opens it again. If files were modified, Studio asks whether to save them.
Save Saves the Design. In settings mode, the entry reads Save (settings).
Close Same as NMStudio > Close.
Settings > Enable Settings Mode Turns on settings mode. This entry is replaced by Remove while settings mode is on.
Settings > Remove Removes the stored settings from the open Design and turns off settings mode. The removal is stored when you save the Design.
Settings > Reload Applies the stored settings again and reloads the parameters.

For settings mode, see Saving and Designs.

Lists one entry per visualization that Studio found at startup. Restart Studio to pick up a new one. An entry is disabled if the visualization has no program for your platform. The menu is absent if Studio found none. See Visualizations.

Entry What it does
Start MuseIO On Windows, starts muse-io; the entry is shown only if Muse\muse-io.exe is next to the Studio program. On macOS and Linux, asks you to select the muse-io program, then shows the command to run in a terminal. See Biosensors.
Information > Serial Ports Shows a message with the serial ports.
Information > Bluetooth Devices Shows a message with the Bluetooth devices.
Entry What it does
Product tour Starts the tour. Shown to community accounts.
Website Opens the neuromore website.
Account Opens https://account.neuromore.com.
Documentation Opens this documentation.
Support Opens an email to neuromore support in your mail program.
Licenses Shows the licensing, terms and privacy texts. See Editions and licensing.
About Shows the About window.
  • Active BCI: shown when two or more EEG devices are connected.
  • User: shown on some accounts.
  • Layout: selects a layout. Some accounts don’t show it.

Open NMStudio > Settings. A change applies and saves at once, with one exception: a new WebSocket port takes effect the next time Studio starts. The groups are General, Devices and Network.

Setting Default What it does
Show FPS Off Shows the frame rate in the graph editors and the drawn views.
Show Performance Info Off Adds performance figures to that display.
Log Level Errors + Warnings None, Errors + Warnings, Info, Detailed Info or Debug. See Troubleshooting.
Sync Engine Automatically On Syncs the engine when a device connects. With Enable Drift Correction on, it also syncs when drift passes Max Drift in Seconds.
Performance > Engine Update Rate (Hz) 100 How often the engine updates.
Performance > Interface Update Rate (Hz) 10 How often the interface updates.
Performance > Realtime Interface Update Rate (Hz) 60 How often real-time views update.
Setting Default What it does
Automatic Device Search On Searches for devices automatically.
Local Power Line Frequency Auto Auto, 50 Hz or 60 Hz. Tools > Start MuseIO includes it in the muse-io command line. It adds no filter to your signals.
Drift Correction > Enable Drift Correction Off Adds or removes samples when a sensor drifts from its nominal sample rate.
Drift Correction > Max Drift in Seconds 2 With Enable Drift Correction and Sync Engine Automatically both on, drift above this schedules an engine sync.
Drift Correction > Drift Tolerance (Early Signal) in Seconds 0.2 Samples are removed only beyond this early drift.
Drift Correction > Drift Tolerance (Late Signal) in Seconds 1.0 Samples are added only beyond this late drift.
Drivers > Enable (driver name) Per driver One checkbox for each driver available to you. See Biosensors.
BrainMaster > Code Key, Serial Number, Pass Key Empty Only in builds with the BrainMaster driver. See Biosensors.

In 1.7.3: Enable Drift Correction is on by default.

Setting Default What it does
Studio Server > Enable TCP server On Turns on the server that clients connect to, on TCP port 45456.
Studio Server > Broadcast server announce Off Announces the server on the network.
Studio Server > Announce interval in seconds 2 Minimum 1.
Studio Server > Client timeout in seconds 5 Minimum 0.5.
OSC Server > Input UDP port 4545 Port for OSC Input nodes. Studio refuses 45456 and 45555.
OSC Server > Local Endpoint Stored, but the current code doesn’t use it.
OSC Server > Target Host/IP 127.0.0.1 Destination for OSC Output nodes.
OSC Server > Target UDP port 4546 Destination port for OSC Output nodes.
Websocket Server > Listen TCP Port 4547 Port for WebSocket clients. Restart Studio after you change it.

Target Host/IP and Target UDP port apply only to OSC Output nodes. For the full port list, see OSC.

Caution: The WebSocket interface is an unauthenticated local protocol. Keep its port (4547 by default) firewalled and don’t expose it to untrusted networks.

These are all the keys Studio handles itself. The window must have focus.

Where Key What it does
Main window F1 to F10 Selects the first ten layouts, by list position. Not during a session. See Layouts.
Graph editor A Fits the graph on screen.
Left, Right, Up, Down Aligns the selected nodes to that side.
Delete (Windows, Linux), Backspace (macOS) Removes the selection, without asking.
Ctrl+X, Ctrl+C, Ctrl+V Cut, copy, paste.
Back-End File System Ctrl+Esc Moves focus to the search box.
Esc Clears the search.
Delete Deletes the selected item, after asking.
Number fields Up, Down Steps the value.

On macOS, the Ctrl shortcuts use the Command key. In the file system, a Mac laptop’s delete key may not work because the code checks only for the Delete key. Use the context menu there.

The Classifier and State Machine windows share this editor. Its side panel holds the palette and the attributes. Show or hide it with the Tools button in the toolbar.

To do this Do this
Add a node Drag it from the palette, or right-click empty space and choose Add Node
Connect nodes Drag from an output port to an input port
Select one node Click it
Select several Drag a rectangle over empty space. This also selects the connections inside it.
Move nodes Drag a selected node
Pan Drag with the middle or right mouse button. On macOS, you can also scroll.
Zoom Mouse wheel. On macOS, hold Alt and scroll.
Open the attributes Double-click a node
Collapse or expand a node Click the arrow on the node

You can’t change a graph’s nodes and connections during a session, when it is read-only, or in settings mode. In settings mode you can still change attributes. Two keys aren’t blocked: the arrow keys still align two or more nodes that are already selected, and Ctrl+V still pastes. See Copy and paste.

Right-click a node or a connection, or right-click empty space. Right-clicking a node that isn’t selected selects it first.

Entry When What it does
Paste Empty space, with nodes on the clipboard Pastes at the pointer.
Add Node Empty space Adds a node by category.
Copy On a node Copies the selection.
Activate On a state machine state Makes that state active.
Lock, Unlock Selection A locked node can’t be dragged, removed or collapsed, and its attributes are read-only. Align commands still move it.
Align Left, Right, Top, Bottom Two or more nodes selected Aligns the nodes. The toolbar has the same buttons.
Remove Node, Remove Connection Selection Removes the selection, without asking.
  1. Select the nodes. Drag a rectangle if you also want the connections between them. A connection is copied only if it and both its nodes are selected.
  2. Press Ctrl+C or Ctrl+X, or right-click one of the selected nodes and choose Copy.
  3. Open the target graph, if it is a different one. It must be the same type: classifier to classifier, or state machine to state machine.
  4. Press Ctrl+V, or right-click empty space and choose Paste.

With Ctrl+V, the nodes land over the current selection. With no selection, they land at the pointer if it is over the editor, and otherwise below and to the right of the existing nodes.

On a read-only graph or in settings mode, the rectangle and the context menu aren’t available. Click one node and press Ctrl+C. Connections can’t be copied this way.

Paste only into a graph you can edit. The code doesn’t stop Ctrl+V on a read-only graph, in settings mode or during a session.

In 1.7.3: Ctrl+X does nothing, and the context menu has no Copy or Paste. Ctrl+V adds no nodes. With one node copied and one node of the same type selected, it copies the settings and name onto the selected node.

Button What it does
Save Saves this graph. Hidden when the graph is read-only or in settings mode.
Align Left, Right, Top, Bottom Shown with two or more nodes selected.
Resync Engine Resets the engine and reloads the parameters.
Errors, Warnings Shown when the graph has any. Click the button, then rest the pointer on it to see the list as a tooltip.

A graph error blocks the session. See Running a session.

The toolbar has Create new file, Create new folder, Delete, and Refresh. These are disabled during a session, and you can’t open a file then either. To open a file, double-click it or right-click it and choose Open. Some entries depend on your permissions for the item.

Item Entries
File Open, Rename File, Copy To Personal Folder, Delete File, Copy JSON to clipboard, Download, Upload, Revisions
Folder Create Folder, Create File, Rename Folder, Delete Folder, Download, Upload

Revisions lists the current revision and up to 32 earlier ones. Choose one to open it. Since there’s no undo, this is your way back to an earlier saved state.

In 1.7.3: On files, Download is Save To HDD and Upload is Upload local file to cloud. Folders have no Download or Upload.

There are three file types: Classifier, State Machine and Design.

A Design links one classifier and one state machine, and can store settings for them. The Studio interface calls the same thing an Experience in some places, such as the Experience Selection window, and a protocol in others, such as Create Protocol in the Select User window, which is not available on every account. Opening a Design also opens its classifier and state machine, and first closes the ones that are open.

  1. In the Back-End File System window, select a folder and click Create new file.
  2. Enter a name, choose Design, and click Ok.
  3. Double-click the Design to open it.
  4. Double-click the classifier, then the state machine you want to link.
  5. Choose Design > Save. The Design stores whichever classifier and state machine are open.
Command What it saves
Save button in a graph editor That graph only.
Design > Save or NMStudio > Save The Design and its links to the open graphs, plus any modified graph you can write to.
Design > Save (settings) The Design, with attribute changes stored as settings in the Design. The classifier and state machine files don’t change.

Without settings mode, Design > Save doesn’t store changes to a read-only classifier or state machine.

Settings mode lets one Design keep its own attribute values, while the classifier and state machine files stay as they are.

  1. Choose Design > Settings > Enable Settings Mode.
  2. Change the attributes you need.
  3. Choose Design > Save (settings).

A Design with stored settings opens in settings mode. To leave it, choose Design > Settings > Remove. For each graph with stored settings, Studio asks whether to apply the settings to the graph or revert it to its original configuration. You can also cancel. Then choose Design > Save. Otherwise the settings return the next time the Design opens, and Studio does not prompt you.

Revert is implemented for classifiers. For a state machine, don’t rely on Revert, because the code does not reload it correctly and it can replace the open classifier. Reopen the state machine from the Back-End File System window instead.

A graph editor’s title shows these after the graph name:

Marker Meaning
(settings mode) Changes go into the Design, not the graph.
(read-only) You can’t write to this graph.
(modified) The graph has changes that aren’t saved.

Save first. These commands treat unsaved changes differently:

Command With unsaved changes
Opening another file of the same type, or Design > Reload Asks: Save, Discard or Cancel.
NMStudio > Exit, or closing the main window Asks: Discard or Cancel. There is no Save option, so cancel and save first.
NMStudio > Close, Design > Close Closes without asking, and the changes are lost.
NMStudio > Log out Asks only whether to log out, not about changes. The changes are lost.

If a session is running when you exit, Studio asks whether to end it and close.
