Debugging
Section titled “Debugging”How can I control the log level and where do I find the log file?
Section titled “How can I control the log level and where do I find the log file?”Studio writes a log file every time it starts, and the log level controls how much detail goes into it.
Change the log level in Studio
Section titled “Change the log level in Studio”- Open NMStudio > Settings. On macOS, this menu is inside the Studio window, not in the system menu bar.
- In the General category, set Log Level to Debug.
The new level applies as soon as you select it, so there is nothing to confirm. The available levels are None, Errors + Warnings (the default), Info, Detailed Info and Debug.
Debug writes many more log lines and can slow Studio down, so use it only while you investigate a problem. Studio saves the level when it exits and uses it again on the next start, so set it back to Errors + Warnings when you are done.
To read the log without opening a file, open Windows > Add > Engine Status, if your account lists this window. Its Debug Log box shows new log lines at the current log level while the window is open.
Change the log level without starting Studio
Section titled “Change the log level without starting Studio”If Studio doesn’t start, you can change the level in the config file.
- Quit Studio if it is still running. Studio saves its settings when it exits, so it replaces any edit you make while it runs.
- Open
NMStudio_settings.cfgin the data folder. - Change the
logLevelPresetline tologLevelPreset=Debug. - Start Studio again.
Studio creates the config file when it first exits, so the file may not exist if Studio has never closed normally. In that case, create it with these two lines:
[General]logLevelPreset=DebugStudio reads this setting partway through startup, after it opens the log file. Anything logged before that point uses the default level, Errors + Warnings. A failure very early in startup therefore gives you no extra Debug lines.
Where the files are
Section titled “Where the files are”Studio keeps its config file and logs in a data folder. The location depends on your platform:
- Windows:
%LOCALAPPDATA%\neuromore\NMStudio, which is usuallyC:\Users\<user name>\AppData\Local\neuromore\NMStudio - Linux:
~/.local/share/neuromore/NMStudio - macOS:
~/Library/Containers/com.neuromore.studio/Data/Library/Application Support/neuromore/NMStudio
The macOS path applies to the packaged app, which runs in a sandbox. An unsigned app you build yourself may use ~/Library/Application Support/neuromore/NMStudio instead.
Inside the data folder:
- The config file is
NMStudio_settings.cfg. - The logs are in the
Logssubfolder. Each start creates a new file namedNMStudio_<date>_<time>.txt, for exampleNMStudio_2026-11-05_14-30-00.txt. The date and time are in UTC. The newest file belongs to the current or most recent run.
In 1.7.3: The log is a single file,
NMStudio_Log.txt, directly in the data folder next to the config file. Studio overwrites it on every start, so copy it before you restart.
If you find a NMStudio_Log.txt in a 1.8.2 data folder, it was left by an older version and is no longer updated.
